Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary movements that develop in utero and are essential for a baby’s survival and early development. These reflexes typically integrate (or “switch off”) within the first year of life as the brain matures and higher-level control takes over.

What Are Primitive Reflexes?

The most common primitive reflexes include:

  • Moro Reflex (Fear Paralysis Reflex): The startle response that helps babies react to perceived threats
  • Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR): Important for hand-eye coordination development
  • Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR): Helps babies learn to crawl and coordinate upper and lower body
